It's always nice to have a drinking establishment within stumbling distance of home. It may be 10 degrees F outside, but I felt like going out to drink, and so off it was to a local restaurant. There is a closer place, just a block away, but previous attempts to hang out there weren't as I had hoped. There are times that I just want to relax, watch a hockey game, and chill with a good beer. The closer place didn't have much in the way of beer, and what they did have was, dare I say, incorrect. If you're not going to have Guinness on tap at least have it in the cans that have the nitrogen charge. They did have Guinness, but in the bottle, and that's just wrong. And when the bartender poured it into my glass he gently poured it down the side, avoiding creating a head, unaware of the fact that with Guinness that's the best part. Adding insult to injury, this was during NFL playoffs and instead of the game they wanted to watch 'Glee'. Not that I'm a massive sports fan (I'm usually indifferent unless it's non-NASCAR motor racing), but 'Glee' was not what I had in mind. Having never been in a LGBT-friendly establishment like this I didn't know what to expect. The clientele and staff were nice, but the choices of drinks and TV programs told me that this may not be the kind of place where I could be a regular.
Tonight's outing was to a locally famous fried chicken joint. They had an acceptable selection of local beers; I consider it an OK selection if I can get some sort of ale on tap, thus avoiding the typical headache-inducing mass-produced domestic swill. I showed up there an hour before they closed, but didn't get the greatest service at the bar. Long waits when there were only a handful of customers, no snack mix brought to me, etc. I did get my food, eventually, and I did get my beers, but I felt like a bit of an inconvenience and not a customer. I was going to tip a little less than normal given the quality of service. I don't know if the third beer was intentionally left of the tab or not (perhaps as an acknowledgement of crap service, or was it just an oversight from a disinterested bartender), so I did leave a decent, albeit not extravagent, tip.
I don't know about others, but I am very particular about tipping. Do a basic job and you get a basic 15% tip. Do a great job and you might get 20-25% or more. Do a crap job and don't be surprised if you get somewhere in the 8-10% range, if that. I remember some TV show where a 5 cent tip was left. The waitress complained, asking "is that my tip?", to which the customer replied, "no, that's a hint".
Perhaps I'll give the piano bar another try. They're open a bit later, had an electronic dart board, and good live music (when I asked them to play some Ben Folds Five...) The customers seemed friendly enough, and perhaps I can teach the bartender the proper way to serve a Guinness. If I can pull that off my work on this planet is complete.

I put a serious dent in Guinness' available volume (and my wallet) at my local pub last night...but it helps the Diageo stock I own, so not that bad of a loss.
